Spring/Summer 2008 brings three new books from Jerome.
April 15 is the scheduled release date for his first major work of
narrative nonfiction ALL HANDS DOWN: The True Story of the Soviet Attack
on the USS Scorpion, published in hardcover by Simon and Schuster.
The disappearance of the nuclear attack submarine U.S.S. Scorpion in May
1968 prompted the largest naval search in U.S. history before the sub's
submerged wreckage was finally located in the mid-Atlantic, where it had
been detoured on a spy mission on its way home to the states from
deployment. No official explanation for the catastrophe was ever
provided. Forty years after Scorpion's loss, the book draws on new
information, including interviews with sources in the Navy and
intelligence community, to tell the dramatic true story of its
sinking . . . and of the 99 men tragically lost with the boat.
ALL HANDS DOWN also reveals the effects of the tragedy on the lives of
the young widows and other family members who lost their loved ones that
terrible spring, and have yet to learn the truth of what happened
because of an ensuing cover up.
Late June brings the publication of Jerome's novel CSI: NEVADA ROSE from
Pocket Books. An all-original story based on the CBS television series
CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, this marks Jerome's first return to
the police procedural and media spinoff genres in nearly a decade.
"I believe the challenge of writing a successful 'tie-in' is to approach
it with the same general sensibility, and attention to plot and
character, as any other novel," he says. "Or to put it another way, it has to
stand alone as a good book, first and foremost, while remaining
absolutely true to the television series, and offering its fans little
bonuses they can't get from a standard sixty minute show . . . more
nuanced characterization, broader story dimensions, and so forth."
Jerome calls CSI: NEVADA ROSE one of the most demanding novels of his
writing career, but believes the result will please longtime fans of
the series and newcomers to the CSI universe alike.
In July, there's the comedic mystery DIRTY DEEDS, Jerome's second
collaboration with his wife Suzanne Preisler, and their follow-up to
2007's Scene of the Grime. Not coincidentally, says Jerome, the heroine
of the series, Sky Taylor, shares Suzanne's nose for a mystery and
penchant for getting into and out of trouble . . . not to mention her
absolute insistence on cleaning up untidy messes as she goes along.
Finally, the 2008 baseball season will mark Jerome's fourth year as a
regular columnist for YESNetwork.com, the official website of the New
York Yankees' Entertainment and Sports Network (YES). As the new season gets underway, Jerome hopes to throw some new curves into his commentary
and coverage of his hometown team, so watch this space for updates
throughout spring training.
