All Hands Down: The True Story of the Soviet Attack on the USS Scorpion
By: Jerome Preisler
Simon & Schuster (April 15, 2008)
Two months before the loss of the American nuclear attack submarine USS Scorpion in 1968, a Russian sub designated K-129 disappeared under extremely mysterious circumstances in waters off Hawaii, hundreds of miles outside its patrol box. Soviet intelligence then erroneously concluded that it had been sent to the bottom after colliding with a US submarine. In ALL HANDS DOWN, Sewell and Preisler reveal how Scorpion was lured into a trap by Soviet naval vessels . . . and then sunk in a brazen attack.
The book emphasizes the human side of the disaster, telling the story of the men whose lives were tragically cut short aboard Scorpion and the subsequent ordeals of their surviving loved ones--the women, some with infants and toddlers, who were suddenly widowed when their husbands were lost with the sub and left standing in the rain to await their return. But even while the Navy insisted to the sailors' families that Scorpion was just late returning home, was conducting an intensive search for the missing boat. Only five days later would officials admit that the sub had most likely gone down, sticking to the explanation that the sinking had been an accident . .. .
And so the official story has remained-until now.
