But even while the Navy insisted to the sailors' families that Scorpion was just late returning home, was conducting an intensive search for the missing boat. Only five days later would officials admit that the sub had most likely gone down, sticking to the explanation that the sinking had been an accident . .. .

And so the official story has remained-until now.
